Ta Xua Cloud-Hunting Paradise & Dinosaur Backbone Ridge

Category: Alpine Cloud-Hunting & Off-The-Beaten-Track Trek | Location: Ta Xua & Hang Dong Communes, Bac Yen District, Son La Province

Straddling the mountainous boundary between Son La and Yen Bai provinces at elevations climbing from 1,600 to nearly 2,875 meters, Ta Xua in Bac Yen district reigns as Vietnam’s undisputed "Sea of Clouds Paradise". Sheltered by surrounding high-altitude ridges that trap moisture and shield valleys from high winds, the Ta Xua amphitheater gathers massive, dense oceans of rolling clouds that linger like fluffy white tidal waves against primordial rock pinnacles from dawn until midday. The most exhilarating landmark here is the famous "Dinosaur Backbone" (Song Lung Khung Long) in Hang Dong commune—a razor-thin walking trail running along the spine of a soaring narrow mountain ridge that juts out into the sky, flanked on both sides by sheer vertiginous drop-offs. Hiking this airy ridge above an endless sea of billowy clouds provides the spine-tingling thrill of walking on the edge of heaven. Other iconic spots include the Dolphin Rock formation, the Solitary Tree, and the primeval Moss Forest. In Ta Xua, visitors also have the rare privilege of tasting authentic ancient Shan Tuyet tea, hand-harvested by local Hmong tribes from moss-draped wild tea trees that have withstood alpine frosts for over 200 years. Waking up in a rustic cliffside wooden homestay, sipping piping-hot golden tea, and watching the sunrise ignite the rolling cloud ocean in brilliant hues of gold and rose is an unforgettable bucket-list memory.
