Vi and Giam Folk Songs of Nghe Tinh (UNESCO)

Inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2014, Vi and Giam Folk Songs represent the cherished spiritual heritage of communities across Nghe An and Ha Tinh provinces (collectively known as the Nghe Tinh region). Born from the rhythmic toil of everyday life, these folk songs accompany farmers transplanting rice seedlings, women spinning cotton in weaving guilds, and boatmen rowing along the poetic Lam and La rivers, capturing the profound loyalty, resilience, and candid warmth of Central Vietnam. "Vi" is a lyrical, free-rhythm singing style characterized by soaring, elongated melismatic vocalizations. Performed without instrumental accompaniment, it unfolds as passionate antiphonal courtship between young men and women during village tasks—such as Vi Phuong Vai (cotton weaving ballads) or Vi Do Dua (boat ferrying chants). In contrast, "Giam" is structured with a firm, rapid metric cadence set to four- or five-word verse meters, ideal for narrative storytelling, moral parables, and intimate confessions of life’s trials. The unique emotional power of Vi and Giam lies in its raw, unadorned delivery using the authentic regional Nghe Tinh dialect, completely capella without orchestral backing. The lyrics form a living treasury of oral literature, rich in poignant metaphors, scholarly wit, and timeless moral codes. Listening to Vi and Giam drifting across moonlit river waters offers travelers a deeply moving glimpse into the profound emotional soul of Central Vietnam.
