Mu Cang Chai Special National Terraced Rice Fields Heritage

Category: Special National Scenic Heritage & Agrarian Art | Location: Mu Cang Chai District, Yen Bai Province

Nestled beneath the towering slopes of the Hoang Lien Son range, the Mu Cang Chai terraced rice fields sprawl across more than 2,200 hectares across La Pan Tan, Che Cu Nha, and De Xu Phinh communes in Yen Bai province. Inscribed as a Special National Scenic Heritage Site in 2019, this colossal agrarian wonder embodies the generational ingenuity and relentless toil of the Hmong ethnic community, who transformed forbidding vertical mountainsides into undulating stairways climbing into the azure sky. Every year between September and October, Mu Cang Chai is swathed in an extraordinary sea of golden ripe rice. Countless tiers of terraces curve harmoniously along mountain contours, creating iconic landforms such as the world-celebrated "Raspberry Hill" (Doi Mam Xoi) in La Pan Tan and the sweeping "Horseshoe Curve" (Doi Mong Ngua) in Sang Nhu. The sweet, intoxicating fragrance of highland sticky rice mingled with crisp mountain air casts an enchanting spell across this Himalayan-style landscape. Beyond the autumn harvest, the "Water Pouring Season" in May and June unveils another breathtaking spectacle, transforming dry terraces into cascading celestial mirrors reflecting skies and fiery sunsets. Adventurous travelers can participate in the annual Paragliding Festival "Flying over the Golden Season" taking off from the summit of Khau Pha Pass—one of Vietnam’s four legendary high passes—to witness the golden valley from a soaring eagle’s perspective.
