Hoi An Ancient Town Lantern Night & Hoai River Floating Lanterns
Schedule: Đêm Rằm 14 Âm Lịch Hàng Tháng (Cao điểm Tháng 9 & Tết 2026) | Location: Vietnam
The Hoi An Lantern Festival, held every month on the 14th night of the lunar calendar (Full Moon night), is widely celebrated as one of Asia's most enchanting romantic nocturnal traditions. Promptly at dusk around 6:00 PM, motorized vehicles are barred and modern electrical streetlights across core thoroughfares—Tran Phu, Nguyen Thai Hoc, and Bach Dang—are completely extinguished. The ancient commercial port transforms into a magical tapestry illuminated solely by tens of thousands of handmade silk lanterns glowing softly beneath weathered mossy eaves and cascading bougainvillea. The celestial soul of the evening takes place upon the tranquil currents of the Hoai River through floating paper lantern ceremonies. Travelers step onto wooden sampans steered by friendly local boatmen, light candles nestled inside colorful origami paper lotuses, make heartfelt prayers for good health and fortune, and gently release them into the shimmering water. In no time, the river transforms into a celestial galaxy of drifting sparks, undulating beneath the starlit sky to the rhythmic dip of oars and acoustic folk melodies echoing from riverside verandas. Beyond the radiant illumination, the festival buzzes with folk cultural activities: lively chess matches on street corners, playful blindfolded pot-smashing games, and communal UNESCO-recognized Bai Choi folk singing competitions near the Japanese Covered Bridge. Savoring a steaming bowl of Cao Lau noodles or herbal lotus tea amidst this serene, vehicle-free haven leaves an indelible impression of early maritime Indochinese grace.
