Bat Trang Ceramic Village & Pottery Museum

Category: Traditional Craft Village & Museum | Location: Bat Trang Commune, Gia Lam District, Hanoi

Nestled along the alluvial eastern banks of the Red River, Bat Trang Pottery Village has flourished for over 700 years since the Ly and Tran dynasties as Vietnam's premier ceramic craft center. Harnessing fine local white clay and ancient kilning wisdom, generations of master potters have perfected world-renowned signature glazes, including cobalt blue underglaze, celadon, crackle glaze, and iron-brown enamel. The village's contemporary masterpiece is the Center for Vietnamese Craft Quintessence (Bat Trang Ceramic Museum). Designed by architect Hoang Thuc Hao, the striking building features seven interconnected colossal terracotta spirals evoking the dynamic spinning motion of a potter's turntable, housing priceless royal antique wares and interactive craft studios. Visiting Bat Trang allows travelers to roll up their sleeves at authentic potter's wheels to shape clay vessels with their own hands, explore narrow cobblestone alleys adorned with drying clay pieces, inspect historic multi-chamber dragon kilns, and purchase handcrafted tea sets and ornate vases directly from artisan families.
