Tram Chim Ramsar Wetland Park & Sa Dec Heritage Flower Village
Category: UNESCO Ramsar Wetland Reserve & Century Floral Capital | Location: Tram Chim, Tam Nong District & Tan Quy Dong, Sa Dec City, Dong Thap
Nestled at the center of the vast Dong Thap Muoi (Plain of Reeds) wetlands, Tram Chim National Park spans more than 7,300 hectares in Tam Nong District, Dong Thap Province. In 2012, Tram Chim was officially designated as the world's 2,000th Ramsar Wetland Site of International Importance and the 4th in Vietnam. The park preserves an authentic tapestry of seasonal wetland habitats: pristine cajuput swamps, golden Xyris indica flower meadows, and sprawling pink lotus ponds supporting immense aquatic biodiversity. Tram Chim's crown ecological jewel is its role as a vital haven for more than 230 waterbird species, including 32 globally threatened species listed on the IUCN Red List. Most famously, it is the sanctuary of the majestic Eastern Sarus Crane (Grus antigone sharpii), an endangered bird reaching up to 1.7 meters in height known for its elegant courtship dances. Gliding by motorized boat along tranquil waterways surrounded by fragrant lotus blossoms, travelers can marvel at flocks of purple swamphens, openbills, and darter birds soaring against the endless horizon. Further south lies the Sa Dec Flower Village, a centenary horticultural empire nestled along the peaceful Tien River. Unlike conventional nurseries, Sa Dec cultivators grow vibrant blooms on elevated bamboo trellises above shallow canal waters, paddling traditional wooden canoes between the floating flower rows to water and prune them. In the lead-up to the Lunar New Year, hundreds of hectares burst into a dazzling ocean of golden chrysanthemums, velvet roses, and marigolds, transforming Sa Dec into Vietnam's most enchanting floral paradise.
