Dien Bien Phu Historic Battlefield National Heritage Complex

Category: Special National Historic Site & Military Heritage | Location: Dien Bien Phu City, Dien Bien Province

Enclosed within the sprawling Muong Thanh mountain basin in Dien Bien province, the Dien Bien Phu Battlefield Complex stands as an epochal historic monument commemorating the victory that "resounded across five continents and shook the earth" on May 7, 1954. Commanded with tactical brilliance by General Vo Nguyen Giap, the Vietnamese revolutionary forces shattered the fortified French colonial military stronghold, ending French colonial dominion in Indochina and inspiring anti-colonial liberation movements worldwide. The Special National Heritage Complex encompasses 45 key historical sites, prominently including Hill A1 (Eliane 2) scarred by the monumental crater left by a one-ton underground sapper explosive, General Christian de Castries’ corrugated-steel command bunker, the remote jungle headquarters of the Campaign Command in Muong Phang, the historic iron Muong Thanh Bridge spanning the Nam Rom River, and the colossal Bronze Victory Monument on Hill D1. A crown jewel of the site is the state-of-the-art Dien Bien Phu Victory Museum, showcasing one of the world’s largest and most intricate 360-degree circular panoramic oil paintings, vividly portraying over 4,500 soldiers amidst dynamic sound and lighting effects. A journey to Dien Bien Phu offers a profound tribute to peace, paired with breathtaking vistas of lush Muong Thanh rice fields and ethnic Thai village cultures draped in blooming white ban flowers.
