Buon Don Elephant Racing Festival & Indigenous Heritage

Schedule: 22 Tháng 3 – 24 Tháng 3, 2026 | Location: Vietnam

Buon Don (Ban Don) has been historically renowned across Southeast Asia as the legendary cradle of wild elephant capturing and taming, immortalized by the exploits of the legendary Elephant King Khunjunob who tamed hundreds of wild pachyderms and earned noble royal titles from the King of Siam. Annually during the third lunar month, when deciduous dipterocarp forests shed their amber foliage beneath radiant dry-season skies, the Buon Don Elephant Festival comes alive to honor human bravery, ancient hunter wisdom, and the sacred elephant—the supreme symbol of highland majesty, prosperity, and power. Festivities commence with the deeply solemn Elephant Health Blessing Ceremony performed by tribal shamans beside the Serepok River. Shamans offer Can wine, roasted pork, and fragrant sticky rice while laying hands upon each elephant's forehead, chanting prayers to the supreme deity Yang to grant the pachyderms stone-strong limbs, wind-sharp ears, and boundless vigor to assist the community. Following sacred liturgies, skilled mahouts (Gru) clad in radiant handwoven tribal attire guide the elephants into playful obstacle exhibitions and thrilling river-fording demonstrations across the churning currents amidst roaring cheers from thousands of onlookers. In recent years, the festival has pioneered a historic transition toward an Ethical Elephant-Friendly Tourism model, replacing intense speed racing with heartwarming celebrations: giant open-air fruit buffets for the elephants, peaceful grand parades, elephant wellness bathing rituals, and educational forest walking safaris. Attending the festival offers travelers a deeply moving glimpse into the ancestral kinship binding highlanders and their gentle giant companions, fostering profound respect for wildlife conservation amidst volcanic realms.
