Lak Lake, Jun Village & Emperor Bao Dai Villa
Category: Natural Lakes & Indigenous Culture | Location: Lien Son Town, Lak District, Dak Lak Province
Situated roughly 56 kilometers south of Buon Ma Thuot along National Route 27, Lak Lake (Hồ Lắk) is the largest natural freshwater lake in the Central Highlands and the second largest in Vietnam after Ba Be Lake. Spanning over 500 hectares of glistening open water framed by the soaring peaks of the Chu Yang Sin mountain range, Lak Lake presents a tranquil alpine panorama where mirror-like waters reflect towering bamboo groves, emerald rice paddies, and traditional wooden dugout canoes gliding gracefully across the serene expanse. Fringing the lake's shores are historic indigenous hamlets including Jun Village and M'Lieng Village, home to the M'Nong Rlam ethnic community who have preserved their ancestral lifestyle for generations. Traditional thatched longhouses rest peacefully beneath ancient shade trees, where artisans weave intricate brocade textiles on wooden handlooms, roast freshwater catfish over wood fires, and carve sleek canoes from single giant tree trunks. Perched atop an elevated pine hill overlooking the lake stands Emperor Bao Dai's Summer Villa—the private hunting lodge of Vietnam's final monarch, offering regal panoramic vistas of spectacular sunsets ablaze across the mountain skyline. An quintessential highlight at Lak Lake is embarking on an authentic dugout canoe (thuyền độc mộc) voyage through blossoming lily pads and lotus ponds, watching kingfishers dive and observing the gentle daily rhythms of M'Nong fishermen casting their nets. As dusk descends and indigo shadows envelop the plateau, visitors can gather around the open hearth of an ethnic longhouse, share earthenware jars of fermented Can wine through slender bamboo straws, and listen to the rhythmic pulse of sacred gongs echoing into the highland night.
