Ban Gioc Waterfall – Majestic Border Cascades

Category: National Scenic Landmark & Transnational Water Wonder | Location: Dam Thuy Commune, Trung Khanh District, Cao Bang Province

Formed by the pristine Quay Son River in Dam Thuy commune, Trung Khanh district, Cao Bang province, Ban Gioc Waterfall ranks as the world’s fourth-largest cross-border waterfall situated along an international frontier (after Iguazu, Victoria, and Niagara). Celebrated globally for its fairy-tale majesty, the cascade plunges down over 30 meters through stepped tiers of mossy limestone ledges, generating a perpetual mist that hovers dramatically over deep turquoise lagoons. The cataract is split into two breathtaking sectors: the roaring three-tiered Main Falls with its thunderous multi-level plunges, and the gentle, silk-like Secondary Falls that cascade gracefully down jungle-clad terraces. During late summer and autumn, abundant river volumes charge the falls with magnificent force, casting shimmering double rainbows under the morning sunshine. The surrounding landscape features whispering bamboo groves, idyllic ethnic Tay and Nung hamlets, and the iconic karst towers of Non Nuoc Cao Bang UNESCO Global Geopark. Travelers can board traditional shaded bamboo rafts piloted safely into the spray zone near the foot of the main cascades, feeling the refreshing roar and misty breeze of the river up close. Just above the waterfall, the venerable Truc Lam Ban Gioc Zen Monastery rests serenely on Phia Nhan mountain, offering panoramic aerial vantage points overlooking the entire river valley and the tranquil international frontier.
